Student Internship Program

Broadway Bound is launching a new Student Internship Program (SIP) designed for students 13 and up who are eager to explore and gain experience in non-performance aspects of theatre production. SIP will create opportunities for students to discover how shows truly come to life – in areas such as directing, choreography, stage management and eventually other essential disciplines that shape every production.

Each intern will work closely with an experienced theatre professional specialized in a particular discipline who serves as a mentor and collaborator. Together, the mentor and intern will build a personalized learning plan tailored to the student’s interests, goals, and existing skills, ensuring that every intern gains meaningful, relevant experience.

SIP interns will step directly into the creative process, working side-by-side with their mentors on Broadway Bound’s Mainstage productions. This fall, interns will have the opportunity to contribute to You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (with casts ages 5 -12) and Guys & Dolls (for students 12 and up.) Students who are also interested in performing this fall in Guys & Dolls are welcome to apply for SIP, but they must be available as an intern to support casts other than their own.

Types of Internships

Directors are responsible for establishing and leading the execution of the artistic vision of a show, collaborating with the rest of the Creative Team (musical director, choreographer, stage manager and designers) to tell the story in an interesting, cohesive way. As a Directing Intern, you will work closely with a director who has prepared for rehearsals by doing script analysis and dramaturgical research, developing their concept, and building the actors' playground. Your director will mentor you and provide opportunities for you to practice as you learn the ins and outs of leading rehearsals, creating composition (stage pictures) and movement (blocking) with the actors, and giving notes to performers and the Creative Team to tell the most effective story. You will also be invited to production meetings, where you will gain insight into how directors communicate their concept and vision to designers so they can collaboratively create the visual world of the story. Your mentor will demonstrate the importance of preparation, communication, team-building, creative problem-solving, compromise, patience, and a sense of humor to the successful direction of a production.

Be an attentive, active participant in the rehearsal room
Shadow the director (observe their process, routines, how they work with actors, how they collaborate with the Creative Team, etc.)
Offer suggestions/notes pertaining to storytelling to the director
Assist the director by taking notes during rehearsals, Spacing, Tech, and Dress
Lead staging review sessions
If asked to direct any portion of the show: prepare in advance to get feedback from the director before directing students in that show segment. When the time comes to direct, apply notes and feedback from the director throughout the process.
Directing Interns for You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown will also lead, monitor, direct, and give notes to their cast's Woodstock Ensemble (5-7 year olds)

Choreographers create original dance and movement which effectively tells the story. Choreographers collaborate with the director to ensure blocking flows seamlessly into choreography and supports the overall artistic vision and concept of the show. As a Choreography Intern, you will work closely with the show’s choreographer to lead daily physical warm-ups, teach actors their choreography and formations, and run cleaning sessions so the performance is sharp and in sync. You will cultivate the skills required of a great choreographer: someone who is not only an experienced dancer, but also a creative visionary, an open-minded collaborator, clear communicator and patient teacher.

Be an attentive, active participant in the rehearsal room
Learn and assist in teaching all choreography for all musical numbers
Be prepared to lead review/cleaning sessions, as scheduled
Keeping in mind all parameters provided by the Director and/or Choreographer, create and teach choreography for their assigned selection in the show
Apply feedback and notes from the Director and Choreographer throughout the process
Choreography Interns for You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown will be tasked with creating and teaching choreography for the principal character(s) in each musical number.

Musical Directors are responsible for the musical rendering of the show, including the integration of vocal and orchestral elements into a production. As a Musical Directing Intern, you will be guided by the show's Musical Director to assist with teaching and rehearsing vocal numbers with performers, ensuring that all cast members can confidently execute their parts, harmonies, solos, etc. You will also support the Musical Director in managing musicians, coordinating any necessary rehearsals and performances schedules so the band can blend seamlessly with performers when they come together at the theater. You will practice teaching and leadership skills and hone your ability to communicate effectively, as well as further develop your musicality and knowledge of vocal and instrumental technique.

Stage Managers are responsible for coordinating all logistical and technical needs of the entire production process. A Stage Manager serves as a show knowledge and information hub, managing and staying in consistent communication with the Creative Team, students, and families, ensuring everyone has the information they need and all questions answered in a timely manner. As a Stage Management Intern, your mentor will demonstrate, teach, and give you opportunities to practice the skills and responsibilities crucial to excellent stage management: organization, leadership, confidence, clear communication, time management, patience, and adaptability. Stage Management Interns may also be asked to assist in the creation and organization of props and/or costumes, depending on your interest, availability, and the needs of the production.

Be an attentive, active participant in the rehearsal room
Shadow the Stage Manager (observe their process, routines, organizational systems, note-taking, time management, and collaboration/communication with students, families, and the Creative Team)
Learn how to create and update necessary show paperwork (actor/scene breakdown, prop lists, costume sheets, quick change lists, performance run sheets, etc.)
Record blocking, upon request
Once actors are supposed to be off-book, take line notes during runs to ensure the text in the script is delivered with 100% accuracy
Assist with the creation and organization of props and/or costumes, depending on interest and availability
Learn how to create a Prompt Book and call cues for the show
Call at least a portion of one of your cast’s performances. Some Stage Management Interns may be given the opportunity to call the entire show, up to the discretion of the Stage Manager.

Time Commitment and Schedule

A cohort of interns – that is, one Directing Intern, one Choreography Intern, and one Stage Management Intern – will be designated for each cast of this fall’s shows. Interns should expect to work between 5 to 8 hours per week.

Each intern's schedule will mirror the rehearsal and performance schedule of the cast to which they are assigned. During regular rehearsal weeks, that means attending both of their cast's 2-hour rehearsals as well as a 2-hour Friday rehearsal on alternating weeks. Once rehearsals move to Magnuson Park Theater ahead of opening, interns are expected to attend their assigned cast's spacing, tech and dress rehearsals, each of which is 4 hours long. Interns should also plan to attend all three of their assigned cast's performances. In addition to rehearsals and performances, interns may be asked to attend occasional meetings and/or trainings with the director, other creative team members, and/or other like-discipline interns from other casts.

Students who wish to perform in Guys & Dolls and also be an intern, will be assigned to a cast of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. This would require availability for both their performing cast's rehearsals and performances, as well as those of the cast to which they are assigned as an intern. Students combining performance in Guys & Dolls with an internship should expect to invest anywhere from 10 to 16 hours each week across these two endeavors.

How to Apply

Space in SIP is limited. Participants will be selected based on their experience, maturity and genuine passion for learning. The first step is submitting an application. After applying, candidates will be invited to take part in a conversational interview. This will be a chance to share what excites them, what they hope to explore, and why they believe they are ready to take full advantage of the opportunities SIP affords.

Applications are due by September 8th, 2026 at 11:59 pm.
Interviews will take place between Monday, September 14 – Thursday, September 17 between 4:30 and 9:00 pm.
Both casting for the fall shows and SIP Internships will be announced on Friday, September 18th.
With spaces limited for SIP, not all students are guaranteed an internship, if they are also interested in performing in Guys & Dolls they can. They must sign up and audition, if they are selected for the internship, they will need to indicate which they would prefer to do.
