For Ages 13-21

Summer Spotlight is aiming to get young teens interested in aspects of theatre outside of acting, as well as give them an opportunity to work in those departments. All shows through Broadway Bound’s Summer Spotlight will be student directed, designed, and produced. Helping young adults look into the many careers that are not always seen directly on stage. Also, helping students understand and appreciate the work that they don’t tend to see in person when acting in a show. Although much of this program is looking into the behind the scenes part of creating a musical it also uses student actors in order to learn what it’s like to take direction and to professionally work alongside their peers. Our goal is to introduce teens to theatre in a new light and to give them the experience and mentoring required to be able to independently produce their own production. It also drives to express the importance of every single individual behind and in front of the curtain.

Learn More about Cry-Baby

The Show:
Crybaby, leader of the rough and tumble Drapes, bumps into Allison Vernon-Williams, a good girl who wants to go bad, while waiting in line for the Polio vaccine. He invites her to watch him sing at the Jukebox Jamboree, to the horror of her goody-two-shoes boyfriend, Baldwin Blandish and protective grandmother, Mrs. Vernon-Williams. The unlikely lovers are tragically separated when Baldwin and the Squares burn down Crybaby’s beloved hangout, Turkey Point, and then frame him for arson! At the trial, Lenora Frigid, a wannabe Drape with the hots for Crybaby, reveals that she is pregnant with Crybaby’s baby! Crybaby and his Drapes, Hatchet Face, Dupree, Mona, Wanda and Pepper are taken to juvenile detention centers, and Allison returns home, confused and heartbroken. In prison, Crybaby and Dupree lament their circumstances before escaping! Allison gets engaged to Baldwin in her confusion, and Mrs. Vernon-Williams discovers that Baldwin set the fire that put Crybaby in prison. All this culminates at the newly opened theme park, where Mrs. Vernon-Williams clears Crybaby’s name, and Baldwin and Crybaby face off in a musical battle for Allison’s heart. The clear winner, Crybaby and Allison are reunited, as Dupree plans to rebuild Turkey Point and Baldwin is dragged off to prison, where he belongs!
